During the nineties when the socio-economic diversities began to raise their voices in all over Maharashtra State specifically in the urban areas; situation in Marathwada was quite different. Marathwada a region of Maharashtra would be called then as the most backward region in the context of education, economic and social conditions of people. No awakening stirred people especially women to come out from ignorance, stereotyped social norms & roles that made them more vulnerable to violence and subjugation. Late Prof. Dr. Shaila Lohiya who was a professor at local arts college realized the tragic situation of women and girls in Beed district. She thought financial independence may improve their condition and position in the family as well as in society. So she initiated ‘Savitri Mahila Udyog’ an informal group to provide Skills training and develop entrepreneurship among women who were estranged by husband or widows. More than one thousand women were benefited and many more started supplementary income generation. Late Prof. Dr. Shaila Lohiya wished to address and incorporate all the issues that cause deprivation of women through building a separate women association. Thus the Manaswini Mahila Vikas Sevabhavi Sanstha is established in 2014 on her first death anniversary by her followers and disciples to chess the dream of women empowerment.
